There Is a Difference Between Pushing AI to Clients and Having Clients Pull It From You. This Week ProjectApp Crossed That Line.

There's a meaningful line between push and pull in sales. This week ProjectApp crossed it with AI. What that actually changes.

Project App

Engineering Team

There's a line worth drawing between two very different states of a commercial offer. In the first state, you have a capability and you spend most of your sales energy explaining why clients should want it. That's push. In the second state, clients arrive already wanting what you can deliver, and your job is demonstrating you can deliver it better than the alternatives. That's pull. This week ProjectApp crossed that line with AI. A client asked for it explicitly. That changes something that's hard to articulate but very real.

What Changes When You Cross the Line

When you're in push mode on a capability, every sales conversation has an extra layer. You have to establish that the capability matters before you can talk about whether you can deliver it. That's not a dealbreaker - ProjectApp has closed a lot of projects while explaining why software a la medida is better than a generic SaaS tool. But it's slower, and it requires more energy per conversation. When a client arrives already wanting what you offer, that layer disappears. The conversation starts at a different point.

Push: How it looks

You establish that the capability matters. You explain why the client should care. You justify the investment before you can talk about the solution. Slower. More energy per conversation.

Pull: How it looks

The client arrives already wanting it. The conversation starts with the specific problem. Your job is demonstrating competence, not building the case for the category. Faster. Higher conversion.

What Made This Pull Happen

I've been thinking about what enabled this particular client to ask for AI explicitly rather than waiting for us to bring it up. Part of it is probably the general acceleration of AI conversation in the market this year. Part of it is likely that we published a blog post a few weeks ago about how we use AI internally to accelerate development - and that content reached someone who was already thinking about AI for their own operation. Content that describes what you actually do, honestly, tends to attract clients who want exactly that.

  • Published honest content about internal AI use - attracted clients thinking about AI for themselves.
  • Market conversation about AI accelerated enough that clients arrive with AI already on their agenda.
  • Internal AI use built credibility - we're not selling something we don't use.
  • The specificity of 'AI for your operation' is more attractive than 'AI' as a generic feature.

What Comes Next

The line between push and pull isn't permanent once you cross it. It requires maintaining the positioning, continuing to do the work that makes pull possible, and building more cases of clients who asked for what you delivered. But the first pull signal - the first client who asks for something you were already building toward - is a meaningful marker. It means the positioning is starting to work.

"The first client who asks for what you've been building toward doesn't change your capability. They change how clearly you can describe it."

β€” What this week taught me

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

  • 1Push and pull are meaningfully different states - pull is faster, higher conversion, and requires less energy per conversation.
  • 2The first pull signal on a new capability is a meaningful marker that positioning is working.
  • 3Content that honestly describes what you do tends to attract clients who want exactly that.
  • 4Crossing the push-to-pull line on AI doesn't mean the work is done - it means the positioning is starting to land.

The client who asked for AI didn't change what ProjectApp does. They changed how clearly we can describe what we do. That's what pull does - it gives you language the market already uses, which makes everything else easier.

If you're at a similar inflection point with your offer - something changing in what clients want that's forcing you to articulate something you were already doing - write to me. That conversation is always interesting.
