Colombia Produces World-Class Founders. Isabela Went With $3,000. I Started With Local Websites. We're Both Still Building.

Isabela Rodriguez went to San Francisco with $3,000, quit her job a week later, and had her first invoice in 4 weeks with $1B+ in pipeline. She got into YC. She's Colombian. So am I. That story doesn't make me feel behind — it reminds me what we're capable of building.

This week I read Isabela Rodriguez's story and something shifted. Not generic LinkedIn motivation — something more concrete. Isabela is Colombian, 24 years old, went to San Francisco with $3,000, quit her job a week after arriving, and four weeks later had her first paying client and over $1 billion in assets under management in her prospect pipeline. Today her company, Zolvo, is in Y Combinator. What I felt reading that wasn't 'I should be doing the same.' It was something different: Colombia produces world-class founders. And I'm part of that ecosystem.

The Story That Made Me Think

Zolvo replaces the back office of commercial lenders in the US with artificial intelligence. These companies manage billions in assets using spreadsheets and 1990s software. Isabela identified that problem, talked to over 30 people in the sector to validate it, and started building. Her first paying client signed before a single line of code was written. That's not luck — that's the result of understanding the problem so clearly that the client doesn't need to see the product to believe in the solution.

"I came to SF with $3K, quit my job a week later to build Zolvo. Hustler by nature — I execute fast and show results to clients, not fluff."

— Isabela Rodriguez, CEO and co-founder of Zolvo (YC P26)

Why It Resonates — Even Though the Paths Are Different

I didn't go to San Francisco. I started building websites for local businesses in my city as a kid, because I discovered that through code I could create without limits anything I could imagine. I went to university, founded ProjectApp, and learned that software isn't just technology — it's productivity multiplied for businesses. Isabela's path and mine are completely different in context, market, and scale. But something is exactly the same: we're both Colombians building software solutions for real business operation problems.

  • Isabela replaces 1990s software at commercial lenders in the US market.
  • I replace Excel, WhatsApp, and manual processes in Colombian and Mexican companies.
  • The core problem is the same: operations that shouldn't be manual and still are.
  • The market is different. The determination to build from Colombia for the world is the same.

Key Takeaways

Key Takeaways

  • 1Colombia produces world-class founders — Isabela's story isn't an exception, it's evidence of a pattern.
  • 2Every founder's path is different but the determination to build something real from here is shared.
  • 3The first client signed before writing code — diagnosing the problem always precedes the product.
  • 4The limit isn't geography. It's the size of the problem you decide to attack.

Isabela Rodriguez got into YC. I keep building ProjectApp from Medellín, now looking toward Mexico with the best semester in the company's history. We're both still on the path. And that, more than any metric or funding round, is what motivates me most about reading stories like hers.

If you're building something from Colombia or LATAM and want to talk about what that looks like from the inside, write to me. Those are the conversations I enjoy most.
