Colombia Is Ranked #35 Worldwide in Startups. The Local Market Is Still Tough. Both Things Are True at the Same Time.
Colombia's startup ecosystem grew 29% annually and reached #35 worldwide. Building ProjectApp from the inside, the local market is still one of the toughest. This is the tension nobody names.

Project App
Engineering Team
This week Colombia reached #35 worldwide in StartupBlink's Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026. 29.3% annual growth, triple the Latin American average. 2,295 active startups. US$857 million in investment. The Colombian tech ecosystem is maturing at a pace few expected. And while I read those numbers, building ProjectApp from Medellín, I feel something many Colombian founders probably feel but rarely say publicly: the local market is still one of the toughest I know. Both things are true at the same time. And that tension is exactly the conversation worth having.
What the Global Data Says
The Colombia Tech Report 2025-2026 from KPMG and BBVA Spark painted a picture that three years ago would have seemed optimistic: 2,295 active startups, 24% annual growth tripling the Latin American average, and an ecosystem increasingly attracting international capital. Fintech leads with 19% of the total, followed by SaaS at 11%. B2B models represent 48% of the ecosystem. Colombia isn't just an emerging market — it's becoming a regional hub with global credibility.
The Numbers That Matter This Week
Colombia reached #35 worldwide in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026, with 29.3% annual growth far exceeding the regional 8% average. The ecosystem has 2,295 active startups and recorded US$857 million in 131 investment transactions during 2025.
Key Takeaways
Key Takeaways
- 1The global ranking and local difficulty don't contradict each other — both are true. Ecosystem maturity doesn't eliminate market friction.
- 2For Colombian software founders, the clearest opportunity today isn't just local — it's using Colombia as a base to reach international markets.
- 3Capital is more selective in 2026: unit economics, retention, and path to profitability are the criteria that now open doors.
- 4Colombia Tech Week in August is the ecosystem's most important event this year — 20,000 founders and investors in Bogotá.
Colombia at #35 worldwide is news I celebrate. And at the same time, building here still requires a resilience the ranking doesn't capture. The combination of those two realities — the global ecosystem optimism and the real day-to-day difficulty — defines the moment we're in. And for founders navigating it from the inside, recognizing both is more useful than celebrating only one.
